Proposal for artwork on the walls of the PRINCE STREET SUBWAY STATION - NEW YORK
CITY Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts for Transit - May 2000
Each one of us is a Prince …! I propose that each Prince have his own plate in the PRINCE STREET SUBWAY STATION in NEW YORK
CITY. Each ceramic tile on the walls of this subway station will be like an engraved stone. The single word “PRINCE” will appear on each tile. Depending on which production techniques
used (see below), it can appear either as a dull off white on the white polished background of the tile or on the contrary, that is whiter and shiner than the tile. The subtle contrast of
white on white and the variation of techniques will produce a vibrating play of light and energy with respect to motion of trains or people waiting. The walls will seem alive, so will the crowd
of Princes!
